Tell me a time you failed forward and what you learned from the experience
I once believed that achievement is the only measure of success and provider of happiness. There was a 5 year time span where I was studying for the CFA exams, moving from MA to CT, finishing my MBA from a university in MA while living in CT, buying a home, getting married, and starting a family. Upon failing the CFA level 2 for the second time and having to decide if I was going to try a third time, I had to contemplate the why, for what purpose, and at what cost. That is when I learned success and happiness are what I decide for myself, not from how much I can impress others with my accomplishments.
What are your biggest obstacles and barriers to success?
Getting out of my own way is my biggest obstacle. When results do not occur the way I anticipated, I am prone to believing the results were in my control and therefore, failure becomes my fault.
What is the proudest moment of your leadership career?
While working in Boston, headed back to the office from lunch, I ran into three people who I had once managed. One of them shared how they appreciated and will always remember me by the evening I stayed late to help her solve a problem. To me, I was just doing my job. I had no idea of the impact and message my actions conveyed. Years later she was still appreciative that I took off my coat and committed to resolving the issue with her.
