Created in 2007 as Bento Studios, Otter Mage Designs is a woman-owned and operated, conservation-conscious art studio based in Jacksonville, Florida.
Jade, the owner and artist, is well-known throughout the southeastern United States convention circuit for her bold anime style art. She has exhibited at some of the largest conventions in the country, including MomoCon and Anime Expo. She has written, illustrated, and self-published seven books of an original action-adventure manga series, Game Over and has many more on the way! Jade is a Twitch Affiliate and has been featured as a guest artist and panelist at conventions throughout the country. She's a proud Gator and student at the University of Florida's Warrington College of Business, where she is finishing her degree.
Jade's source of inspiration for her work comes from her love of Japanese culture and media as well as her love of animals. She believes in empowering others through art and community. Her goal is to bring happiness and laughter to as many people as possible through her work.
What differentiates you from the competition? My ability to tell stories that connect with people. Storytelling is so much more than just telling people something. It's about making real connections with people so that you can make them feel something. Because I love crafting stories that challenge our perceptions of our world and to make us laugh, I'm genuinely interested in the stories, worlds, and characters created by other people. This love, passion, and compassion shows in my commission work for people who have original characters or who want to bring their D&D character to life in the anime style. I take the time to truly listen not because I want to make a dollar, but because their passion fills my heart, too. And that's what it's really about. Those connections. I don't think all artists have that and I don't think that all people who create manga or comics have it either. So, I'm always excited to meet people who share these passions and am always eager to do my absolute best to draw them something they'll cherish of their characters and ideas - even if it's just a quick sketch for someone on my Twitch stream.
What are your top selling services or products that your company offers? My best sellers are my original manga. I've sold thousands of copies in person and online. After that, my commissions. I specialize in creating custom anime style art of... anything you want! I've drawn everything from landscapes to family and pet portraits, to JoJo's Bizarre Adventure characters.
If you had one message to get across to future customers, what would it be?If there's something you truly love doing, it's worth fighting for it. And, on those days when you feel like you have no one else in your corner, message me. I'm happy to cheer you on, give you some tough love, or pat you on the back for a job well done. My studio isn't just about selling art. It's about community. You're always welcome here.
What is the biggest marketing challenge that you will face in the upcoming year?Finding consistency promoting my art online. I find that I'm a strong business-minded woman, but also a very creative woman. Those two parts of me are in constant conflict. Part of me needs to post on social media and leverage the advertising capabilities of each platform better and recognizes that I need to either hire help (which is not feasible right now) or devote at least 20 hours per week to the effort. But the creative part of me would rather sit in a room, vibe to some music, and produce art. To be successful, I have to find a balance of both. With the changing convention selling landscape, my handicap, and the essential nature of social media for promotion, it's time to embrace it and push forward using the skills and knowledge I've gained at the University of Florida. All while on a shoe-string budget.
