Morgan:
Welcome back to another episode of On A Mission, where we highlight those who are on a mission to make an impact. I’m Morgan Allen, joined today by Daijha Reed with Bridge Care Connections. Daijha, thank you so much for joining.

Daijha:
Thank you so much for having me. It’s an honor.

Morgan:
Absolutely. So Daijha you’re doing great things, taking what you’ve done in the healthcare space and translating it into underserved communities. And tell me how you’re doing this. What you got going on?

Daijha:
Yeah. So we started this nonprofit with a focus on the demographic of minorities and underserved communities that are not able to get the access to health care they need, or don’t have the knowledge about the health care that they’re supposed to be receiving. We’re really investing into equitable health care, and we believe that health care should not be a scary space or a space that traumatizes you.

PTSD regarding health care is a thing and is prominent amongst underserved communities and minorities. So we started a company called Bridge Care Connections, where we’re stepping in to be the bridge between the gap. We also provide ongoing case management and care management services. So we’re teaching you the verbiage around your symptoms, and giving you treatment options, letting you know about your ability to get second opinions.

And we’re also going to create a roster that has providers with outstanding ethical standards. And they’re very knowledgeable about minorities, veterans, youth that have crisis management needs, just a long variety of things, and supporting them throughout the whole mission.

Morgan:
And that is absolutely incredible. What a way to bridge the gap for those who are struggling, even, you know, no matter who you are, we all have really big challenges at the doctor to be able to advocate for ourselves. I remember when I was young, like not knowing how to communicate some of the things I was feeling and not feeling heard.

So I really commend you for what you’ve done there. What are some of your goals with this nonprofit?

Daijha:
Yeah. I would say for our first year goals, obviously to clean up those programs and make them more accessible to people, specifically on Medicaid and Medicare. And then we also want to provide a version for the youth for situations like you described, because I also had a similar experience.

And I know that when I first left the house, I did not know how to schedule a doctor’s appointment. I didn’t know what I was eligible for and what kind of care I should be receiving. And I think that people also don’t understand how their simple life goals can even be tied into getting a grasp on their medical care.

So if you want straight teeth, if you want clear skin, if you’re looking to work on your anxiety issues, if you’re looking to work on your sleep issues, really connecting those things and not making one seem so mutually exclusive to the other.

But in our grand scheme of things, like I said, we also want to provide services to providers so that they’re able to take self assessments first and see if they are implementing microaggressions, whether it’s intentional or not intentional, and getting help and resources to be better providers and to provide equitable health care.

And I would say in our five year goal, what I’m most excited about is we’re looking to host a Health Care Ball, which will be a fundraiser for all nonprofits that are geared towards health care in Denver. A lot of the people on our team are a huge fan of Bridgerton, so we’re looking to see all of our favorite nurses and doctors have their best gowns and let it be a charitable event that gives back to Denver.

Morgan:
Oh my goodness, I love that so much. So a Bridgerton themed fundraising ball. That’s fantastic. So Daijha, you’re not just in the nonprofit healthcare space. You also are an author, a publisher. So tell me about that.

Daijha:
Yeah. So I just published my first book, which is Card Petals a Bloom, sponsored by storms. And it’s a memoir. I believe that I’ve been so successful in serving underserved communities and people that have not been seen or heard because I’ve had lived experience.

And I feel like too many stories are told from third parties or after the insight. And so I wanted to be unique in writing my story and what it is when you’re healing in a situation that you’re not necessarily able to get out of right at that moment, and to be raw and honest about the fact there’s not always a beautiful conclusion or happy conclusion.

And I also emphasized how much my faith has taken me through this journey. And we also talked about different theories such as trauma bonding and reinforcement from people like Robert Pullman and B.F. Skinner.

So I think that is super relatable. And I think that it’s a story that women need to hear, especially women of color. Domestic violence and abuse are way too prominent, especially in my community.

And so I feel like being somebody that made it not taboo to be silenced about those situations, but advocate for your voice to be heard and seen, was really important to me.

And so even in my next project, I’m looking to do a collaboration of women that are minorities, stories of their experiences of trauma, similar to the way that chicken noodle soup for the girl assaults hold it from their own hearts and their own now, and not from a third party, which seems to be where I feel like communication has been lacking around these issues.

Morgan:
Oh my gosh, it’s so beautiful what you’re doing. Because providing that platform for people to be heard, to be seen and to help support others who have gone through a similar trauma, a similar thing.

So thank you so much, Daijha, for the great work that you’re doing with your nonprofit as an author and just a future visionary. So I appreciate your time.

Daijha:
Thank you so much.

Morgan:
