Welcome back to On A Mission from Hendersonville outside of Nashville, Tennessee. We’re at the Shell Brothers Display Center, and we are talking about this area and in particular businesses that give back. We’ve got Nate Newton from half back with us. Nate, how are you doing? Great. Not that Nate Newton to be sure. Unless you’ve dropped a ton of weight my friend.
Brian
You ever play professional football? Okay, but you have been a professional beer maker for the last 20 years. What’s the right title for you beer makers? Not it. Beer master. Beer Meister.
Nate
Brewmaster, maybe brew master CEO, whatever needs to be done.
Brian
How’d you get into the business?
Nate
I was a long time home brewer. Started brewing in college back in the mid 90s. It was something I always wanted to do. And then I found myself living here in Hendersonville. There was no brewery. So the dark duty presented itself, and we did it.
Brian
Is it trial and error when you’re a home brewer? Until you kind of feel like. Yeah, my friends will drink this with me.
Nate
You brew a lot of bad beer. It’s all right, for sure. Yeah, but eventually, you know, if you pay attention and, and, you know, work on it and you start to make better and better beer.
Brian
You know, I have a friend in North Florida who tells me he does home brew. That beer actually has more flavor and more flavonoids than wine does. And people think about sniffing wine and getting the whole experience. How do you master the flavors of all of that?
Nate
Well, there’s such a range of styles. There’s millions of combinations of ingredients. And then plus you have, you know, it’s actually made by a live organism. Yeast makes it so, you know, you’re trying to kind of farm that yeast and get it to do what you want it to do. And, you know, is.
Brian
It kind of like.
Nate
Barbecue? So many variables.
Brian
Barbecue where you’re taking different spices and mixing and matching them to get a flavor pattern. It doesn’t get that intricate. Oh, you have a chemistry degree somewhere and you’re working at we don’t know about it.
Nate
I don’t have a chemistry degree, but I am familiar with chemistry.
Brian
So when did you start commercially?
Nate
We opened in 2017. Okay. In the fall of 2017. So when opened an ab years.
Brian
And how many different beers do you make?
Nate
We have 20 on tap all the time. Okay. In a taproom at the brewery? 5 or 6. We’ll call flagships year round beers.
Brian
What’s your signature? Which is the one that people know you’ve most.
Nate
For the folk in Scottish. So it’s a darker, malty, kind of caramelly beer. It’s actually when a couple of old beer.
Brian
Awards said, you bring it tonight, are we going to get a sample of that?
Nate
I do have a so you can get a taste for sure.
Brian
Fantastic. Tell me this. You’re here this evening. As Foodies Care is reaching out to try to make a difference in the community. Why is that important to you to be here? This evening? To be involved in the community?
Nate
Well, it was one of the things, you know, my wife and I, my wife, Suzanne, and I actually founded the brewery. And, it was a very important part of what we always wanted to do. It’s in our vision statement that we want to be a force for good in our neighborhood and beyond. So we work with a lot of local nonprofits.
Nate
We just had a really big event, raising a lot of money for Grace Place Ministries here in town. We work at the Rock Castle. Really, we’re pretty soft touch. So, you know, we don’t have a lot of money, but if you need beer, you can’t. We can help you out.
Brian
I’ve got to imagine that when you have a successful brewery with 20 different beers on tap and a half a dozen award winning flagship beers, that you’ve got strong relationships with your customers, and that goes a long way towards making a difference in people’s lives.
Nate
Absolutely. You know, beer. Beer brings people together. And, we want efforts in the taproom to be kind of, we want to grow that community. We want it to feel like a community.
Brian
Well, thanks for helping us with the Foodies Care Mission this evening. We’re thrilled you’re here and looking forward to a great evening. Thank you. That’s Nate Newton from Half Batch here for Foodies Care. Our first event in the greater Nashville area and we’ll be back for more.
