James:
Hi and welcome to Living My Faith, where we spotlight people in the community that are really living out their faith. I’m your host, James Fenimore, and today I’ve got two very special guests for you.

Joining me, we have Doctor Kate Walsh-Soucheray and Todd. Todd, remind me of your last name. Sylvester. Todd Sylvester. I can’t believe I forgot that. How can I forget? Todd Sylvester. It’s a great strong name. It’s way better than James.

So guys, how are you doing today?

Todd:
Great.

Kate:
Great. How are you, James?

James:
I’m doing well. It’s raining here, so I don’t like that. I’m a Florida guy. I like the sunny weather.

But guys, we started this interview with one simple question, and I’m going to go to Doctor Kate first because Todd, come on, we’re men. We know what we gotta do. We know our jobs here.

So Kate, how are you living your faith?

Kate:
Well, thank you so much. And first of all, thank you so much for having me.

I would say that it’s each day I approach the day as well as I can. I pray in the evening before. I do an Ignatian examine prayer.

I amended it to ask myself, how am I living as a spouse? I pray for my husband and I pray for the day. I think about how I’ve lived my life, and if I’ve lived my life through the kinds of actions that I’ve hoped to example to other people, but to myself as well.

That I’m Christian, that I see people, that I care about people, that I do what I can to just be present.

I think that the most important thing for me is to be present.

James:
That’s beautiful. Thank you so much.

And Todd, the good part about being a man is we go second and we get to cheat code now. We know what’s coming your way.

So Todd, how are you living your faith?

Todd:
Yeah. Thanks for the question and thanks for having me. And Kate, well said.

I’m trying to be more like her honestly.

You know, I learned a long time ago from the book The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren that God doesn’t have love. God is love.

And I learned this principle early on in my recovery from overcoming addiction that if you want to be, give it away.

And so when I give away love to someone else, or compassion or kindness or forgiveness, I know that I’m going to get that back in return tenfold.

And I try to do that every single day, it makes a difference in someone’s life on some level.

And when I do that, I have a good experience.

And that’s how I live my faith honestly.

I’m not perfect by any stretch.

And I once heard that, you know, don’t just quote Jesus, try to do your best to be like Jesus.

And I try to do that. Again, I fall short.

But man, I’ll tell you, when I hit those sweet spots, man, I feel connected to God.

And it’s such a powerful place to be in.

James:
I love that. It reminds me of the scripture that I have on my phone to remind me.

It’s first John 2:6.

All who say they abide in him ought to walk the way he walks.

Those are big shoes to fill, but it reminds me when I start getting a little frustrated in a meeting, I look at my phone and I behave a certain way.

Todd, I want to go back to you.

I know living out your faith is important.

I know you have to do that through your work.

Can you speak a little bit about that?

Todd:
Yeah.

So in my work, I get to meet with clients, about 30 a week individually.

And I also do some group therapy.

And it all stems from my past of overcoming drug addiction and alcoholism.

I’ve now dedicated my life to making a difference in people’s lives.

So I get to meet with people one on one who are suffering and struggling every single day.

And then fortunately, I also get to go and do a few speaking events a month where I get to go out to the community, to businesses, churches, schools, and share my story of overcoming.

And how God’s made an impact in my life, and how I get to do my best to share that message to other people that they can get through that as well.

James:
It’s incredible, Todd.

And remind me after this show, I need to connect you with my wife, Tricia Fenimore, because she’s got a similar story.

I know you guys would really get along.

Doctor Kate, same to you.

I know you get to live out your faith through your work and through your speaking engagements.

Tell us a little bit about that.

Kate:
Yes. Thank you so much.

So first of all, I would say it’s such a blessing to have groups ask me to come to speak, because they can ask anyone, and here I am.

I’m a mother. I’m a wife first of all.

My husband, I’ve been married 43 years.

We have three adult children. They’re all married.

We have seven beautiful grandchildren.

We’re all here for Easter. It was just absolutely the best.

So for someone to ask a woman to come and speak, and that a woman would maybe have something of wisdom to offer, that is a blessing to me.

And then all I do is when I’m beginning to speak, of course I write out my notes and I think I’ve got it.

And then I hear the voice of the Holy Spirit and he says, hey Katie, I’ll take it from here.

And then what I have to do is step back.

I have to rely on the knowledge and the wisdom I have, but allow the Holy Spirit to speak.

Because he knows who’s in that audience.

He knows who needs to hear what he needs to say.

And if I put myself ahead of him, then he isn’t going to relate to that person the way that person needs to hear.

And that just comes down to trust.

So I sit in this office, and that’s the only place I can put the books.

But I’ve been to school three times.

My husband is like okay that’s it, you’re not going anymore.

And I have my son.

I do take voice lessons.

I’m a retired marriage and family therapist.

I was licensed as a therapist and I’m retired.

And I started to take voice lessons when I retired.

But the most important thing for me is stay out of the way, allow the Holy Spirit to speak through me, and trust that he will.

James:
I love it, I love it.

I can’t thank you guys enough for joining me today to tell me about how you’re living your faith, but also how you’re doing it through your work.

And I think that’s so incredible.

Todd, Kate, I can’t thank you enough for joining me.

I want you to know all your information is right below this video, so if people want to reach out to you, your ministries, your businesses, they’ll be able to do that.

But again, thank you so much for joining me today.

It’s a real pleasure.

Todd:
Thank you.

Kate:
Thank you.

James:
My pleasure.

It was a real treat for me and my audience.

And hopefully we’ll have you on soon.

But for Living My Faith, I’m James Fenimore.

I know this has been educational for you guys on how to live out your faith, and I can’t wait to see you do it.

And of course, we can’t wait to see you next time.
